St. Brigid of Ireland Born to a Scottish pagan king and a Christian Pictish female slave who was baptized by St Patrick, - it is said St. Brigid herself heard the great saint of Ireland preach when she was a young child. At the protests of her father, St. Brigid gave away many of his things to the sick and poor. Her father tried to sell her to the King of Leinster, but the king told her father "Her merit before God is greater than ours." After freeing his slave daughter and trying to marry her off, St. Brigid eventually became a nun and started her first convent. She is known for starting the double monastery for both monks and nuns. It is said during her final vows that St. Patrick ordained her as a priest. When told of the mishap, he replied, "So be it, my son, she is destined for great things." Finally, to partially quote the saint herself - "I would like the angels of heaven to be among us. I would like an abundance of peace; I would like full vessels of charity and rich treasures of mercy. I would like cheerfulness to preside over all. I would like....to suffer distress that God would bestow a good blessing upon me." |
