St. Demetrios Lekkas of Greece

A new found Greek saint, born in 1947 in Kolonaki, Greece, an only child to a doctor and midwife.  He died at the age of 32 in 1979 of cancer, which began in his stomach and spread throughout his body.  During his life, he was known for his love, kindness and politeness.  He studied medicine in Italy and became a cardiologist.

At the age of 3 and one half years, he received communion on Holy Thursday.  He and his mother were standing in line to receive the Holy Gifts and the child saint said to his mother, “Mama, Mama why is there a little child on the shoulder of the priest?”  The mother, surprised by this comment, looked at the priest dispensing the Holy Gifts, but saw nothing.  Trying to calm her son, she turned to him and said “Which child?”  Her son replied “That one, with the wings.  Can’t you see him?”  The mother looked at her child and began to cry, realizing that he was seeing something supernatural.  St. Demetrius then began clapping and smiling as some of the communicants received the Holy Gifts and at times, would sigh with sorrow for others who received the Holy Gifts.  Later, after the service, noticing this event asked the young child what he saw.  St. Demetrios said that sometimes the Angel would take the bright light from the communion before the priest put them into the mouth of the communicant.

During his short life, he was known to live a quiet, holy devout life.  He never complained or accused anyone.  Before his death, he requested to receive confession and communion.  During the exhumation of his remains in 1984, a beautiful scent came from his grave, evidencing his sanctity before God.
