St. Sisoes the Great

He was a disciple of St. Anthony the Great and lived in Scetis for 60 years. After the death of St. Anthony, Abba Sisoes lived on the same mountain teaching fellow monks and pilgrims about the wisdom of a godly life.

This particular icon represents a story of when the saint visited the grave of St. Alexander the Great. He saw that even this worldly hero reduced to bones and dust in death.

As his own death approached, his monks witnessed the radiance of the sun shining from his face. After his repose, his body exuded a beautiful fragrance that filled the room. He is considered one of the great desert fathers, dying around the year 429.
