Valaam Icon of the Mother of God

The icon was written by Hieromonk Alipy at the Monastery of Valaam.  He was from the Transfiguration of the Saviour Monastery and was known for his gift as a painter.  Valaam Monastery was known as the Russian Mount Athos because of the strict life led by the ascetics.  In this particular icon, the Mother of God is holding Her Son while standing - presenting Her Son to us.  Her red dress reveals her to be the Divine Heavenly Queen - the Mother of God.  Over time, this icon has become a particular favorite for many Orthodox believers.
